The New Zealand Customs Service, New Zealand Police and the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) work together to identify child victims in New Zealand and globally, and to arrest perpetrators involved in online child sexual abuse.
On the occasion of World Children's Day, those agencies emphasized the urgency of safeguarding the rights and welfare of children. According to Customs, technological advances have led to an increase in real-world and cybercrime, with offenders hiding their identities through encryption and anonymization tools. However, Customs emphasized that these crimes target real children who have suffered severe sexual abuse.
Simon Peterson, Acting Investigations Manager at Customs, emphasized that they are committed to apprehending offenders at the country's physical and cyber borders." Peterson said, "These are not victimless crimes." These are not just images or videos of children; they are crime scene recordings, often involving horrific sexual abuse. Each time these videos are viewed, these children are re-victimized. Sharing these images fuels demand, leading to further abuse, which perpetuates the crime."
Tim Houston, manager of the Home Office's Digital Child Exploitation team, emphasized the role of the internet in facilitating the spread of child sexual abuse material and putting perpetrators in contact with each other. Houston emphasized, "Today's events remind us of the critical importance of protecting and safeguarding the most vulnerable members of society from harm.
New Zealand Police reiterated their commitment to working closely with national and international partners to ensure the safety of children. Inspector Stuart Mills declared, "All children and young people should feel safe from sexual exploitation. We remain committed to strengthening our work with the industry to ensure that those who commit these heinous crimes are brought to justice".
