The Peoria Heights girls basketball team is on a mission to create history and bring a banner to the Roger Bergia Gymnasium. With a young and talented roster, the Patriots are determined to make a lasting impact on the program.
Senior Janessa Wallace, a vocal leader on the team, expresses their desire to etch their names in the school's legacy. "We want a banner on that wall to show how we are," she says. "Prove to everybody else that we can do it because we know we can."
Despite not winning a postseason accolade since 1992, the Patriots have shown signs of resurgence in recent years. Last season, they finished with a 16-16 record, demonstrating their potential.
Coach Chris Reese attributes the team's recent success to their strong bond and positive mindset. "We have high expectations, and a loving environment is what we always say," he emphasizes.
The 2023-24 campaign has been particularly impressive for the Patriots. With a small roster of eight players, they have won eight of their first nine games, thriving in the transition to Class 1A.
Senior Emily Dana believes that their strong team chemistry is a key factor in their success. "We've played together since we were in fifth grade," she says, "so we just have each other's backs."
Dana's individual performance has also been noteworthy. Her 24-point outburst against Eureka was a season-high, and her early-morning shooting sessions with assistant coach Derek Scott have contributed significantly to her improvement.
Wallace has also emerged as a leader on the court. Her positive attitude and newfound confidence have been instrumental in the team's success.
With their unwavering determination and strong team dynamics, the Peoria Heights girls basketball team is poised to make a lasting impact on the program. They are well on their way to achieving their goal of hanging a banner in the Roger Bergia Gymnasium and creating a legacy that will inspire future generations.
